Melvor Idle strips away the graphics and 3D environments of OSRS Gold and other MMOs and reduces it to a simple idle game based on menus where players are able to manage their abilities, inventory and quests. In combat, completing battles as well as winning them earns you XP and loot which is then put into any skills tree or upgrades players select, while performing repetitive tasks like making or cutting wood can bring rewards of their own.
Malcolm has played RuneScape since childhood and has also dabbled in many of the leading idle games such as Clicker Heroes, Cookie Clicker and NGU Idle. Although he liked them however, he believed that it could be doing something that was more rewarding in the same way to Jagex's top RPG.
"So, I set out to create my own in the dark, not knowing it would be released, or even become famous," he tells GamesIndustry.biz. "I tried to design something completely different from the existing idle game mould and something that had a lot of features, and gave players some actual choice about how they would like to advance, rather than just increase numbers in a continuous cycle.
After pondering it for while in a closed room I began to mix concepts and mechanics from traditional MMOs and the popular idle game design, making something that can be played in a casual way, while on the move and fit in the player's hectic life."
Melvor adds: "While the numbers and stats aren't the things that all players enjoy the most about MMOs, it is what gamers who are hardcore stick to after exploration has been completed. Since it is often central to what the longest term players' attention is It was natural to incorporate this into an essential element of Melvor's game's gameplay design. In addition, it's very compatible with design elements commonly found in most idle games."
MMOs but the design in RuneScape was one he took very seriously, creating from the realm of Melvor Idle in a parallel world with the 20-year-old RPG. "RuneScape became such a key base for the game due to the fact that it was a very fundamental gameplay for me" the author reveals."
Much like many others I began playing RuneScape because a lot of my peers used to play it. The fact that it was an online-based game was an important factor in this. The easy entry point with RuneScape's scalar depth and complexity I kept coming back to it for cheapest osrs gold quite a while and is what I wanted to emulate with Melvor Idle."
