This fact sheet has been prepared for the public by the UK Teratology Information Service (UKTIS). UKTIS is a non-profit organisation funded by Public Health England on behalf of the UK health Department. Since 1983, UKTIS has been providing scientific information to healthcare providers about the effects that drugs, recreational drugs and chemicals may have on a developing baby during pregnancy.

What is it?

Paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen in some countries) is used to treat pain and fever and can be bought without a prescription.

Is it safe to take paracetamol during pregnancy?

Acetaminophen has been used by pregnant women for years without any apparent harmful effects on developing babies. For this reason, paracetamol is often recommended as the painkiller of choice for pregnant women. Other painkillers, including over-the-counter painkillers, have not been shown to be safer than acetaminophen; Some are not suitable for use at certain stages of pregnancy. While it is impossible to say that any drug is absolutely safe to use during pregnancy, there is currently no good evidence that paracetamol will harm your baby. However, pregnant women are generally advised to take the lowest dose of paracetamol for as long as needed.

Paracetamol can be sold either on its own or in combination with other drugs, for example in cold and flu medicines. It is important to ensure that the other drugs in the combination product can be taken during pregnancy and that you do not take more than this recommended daily dose of acetaminophen.

This leaflet summarizes the scientific research on the effects of paracetamol on babies in the womb. This information will help you weigh the benefits of using paracetamol against known or possible risks, some of which may depend on the number of weeks of pregnancy you have.

Can taking paracetamol during pregnancy cause miscarriage?

In two studies of women who took paracetamol during pregnancy, no increased risk of miscarriage was found.

Can taking paracetamol during pregnancy lead to premature delivery?

A study that looked at this risk in women who took paracetamol in the third trimester of pregnancy did not show an increased risk of premature birth (before 37 weeks of pregnancy).
